Delius: ritratto di uno sconosciuto

Il 3 febbraio 1998 sulla prima pagina dell’autorevole «Le Monde» si legge un titolo curioso: Un’opera di Delius serve da antidoto alla violenza nel metrò di Newcastle. La notizia è ripresa dal «Daily Telegraph» e rimbalza un po’ dappertutto. Qualche giorno dopo sulla «Stampa», sempre in prima pagina, ne riferisce anche Sandro Cappelletto: l’azienda dei trasporti non sa più come fermare la crescente ondata di vandalismo nelle stazioni, i teppisti sono abituati ad ascoltare il rock diffuso nei corridoi e questo non aiuta certo a calmarli, «poi, la folgorazione: Frederick Delius, compositore inglese Otto-Novecento - eccellente melodista, creatore di atmosfere delicate, evanescenti. Diciamolo chiaro: assolutamente noiose, secondo i parametri del gusto degli adolescenti di oggi. Tra un treno e l’altro, Delius a tutto volume: Ascoltando il cuculo a primavera, Oltre le colline e più lontano, Notte d’estate sul fiume. Flauti gentilissimi, violini dolci più del miele, tutto uno stormir di fronde e hooligans sconvolti, spiazzati. Sedati».
Fin qui nulla di strano. L’idea è a suo modo geniale, ma in fondo non nuova, le biblioteche traboccano di trattati di musicoterapia. Ma quel Delius, quel Carneade, chi è?
Qualche cinefilo con la buona abitudine di leggere con cura anche i titoli di testa e di coda forse avrà notato che nel film Il cucciolo (The Yearling) di Clarence Brown, un commovente successone del 1946 con Gregory Peck e Jane Wyman, Herbert Stothart aveva usato temi di Delius per descrivere la sconfinata natura selvaggia della Florida. Se però si decide di approfondire l’argomento, si resta inevitabilmente stupiti di fronte alla grande quantità di studi prodotti su Frederick Delius e di fronte a una discografia molto ampia, assolutamente inattesa per un autore che anche alla radio non viene poi trasmesso molto. L’unico ambiente dove l’assenza continua è quello della sala da concerto. Forse il pubblico dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia che il 20 novembre 1994 ascoltava Christian Thielemann dirigere il preludio di Irmelin e The Walk to the Paradise Garden non si rendeva conto dell’assoluta eccezionalità dell’avvenimento.
Nonostante tutto questo (o forse proprio a causa di tutto questo...) Delius è diventato un vero compositore «di culto» che quando era ancora in vita ebbe l’onore di essere oggetto di due monografie scritte da uno dei più noti musicologi tedeschi, Max Chop, Frederick Delius (Berlin, Harmonie, 1907) e Frederick Delius, in «Monographien Moderner Musiker», Vol. II (Leipzig, C. F. Kahnt Nachfolger, 1907).
Chi non lo conosce potrebbe cominciare leggendo l’agile saggio biografico-critico di Alan Jefferson, Delius (London, Dent / New York, Octagon Books, 1972). È invece organizzato per aree culturali, cioè i rapporti con America, Scandinavia, Germania, Francia e Inghilterra, il volume di Christopher Palmer Delius. Portrait of a Cosmopolitan (London, Duckworth / New York, Holmes & Meier Publishers, 1976). Molto interessanti, e più recenti, sono pure le raccolte di studi di vari autori curate da Christopher Redwood A Delius Companion (London, John Calder 1976; rist. 1980) e Lionel Carley Frederick Delius: Music, Art & Literature (Aldershot - Brookfield, Vermont, Ashgate, 1997). Sui suoi rapporti con l’ambiente culturale francese è incentrato un altro libro di Lionel Carley, Delius. The Paris Years (London, Triad Press, 1975).
Gli hitchcockiani più esperti ricorderanno il film Sabotatori (Saboteur, 1942), in cui un fuggitivo ammanettato trova rifugio in una villa dove vive un tranquillo musicista cieco che lo accoglie con grande gentilezza. Sedendosi al piano, gli confessa: «Lei non sa di quale conforto possa essere la musica. Io suono il pianoforte. A dire il vero sono un mediocre compositore, ma, vivendo da solo, nessuno mi critica, quindi posso far credere a me stesso di essere un compositore eccellente. Naturalmente preferisco la musica di altri più qualificati compositori che ritengo più gradevoli da ascoltare. (...) Il pianoforte è un amico per me; è l’unico a non sapere che io sono cieco, quindi la cosa non lo imbarazza e non si sente in dovere di essere gentile con me e questo per me è un enorme sollievo. Anche Delius, il compositore inglese, era cieco, ma questa è l’unica cosa che abbiamo in comune...». È molto probabile che, a parte qualche inglese e qualche americano, quasi tutti gli spettatori del mondo si siano chiesti di chi mai stesse parlando, ma uno degli aspetti più affascinanti di Delius è proprio la sua condizione di malato grave, cieco e paralitico per molti anni, che nonostante la sua infermità è riuscito a completare non poche composizioni con l’aiuto inatteso di un giovane musicista che si è trasferito in casa sua a Grez-sur-Loing, vicino a Fontainebleau. È perciò fondamentale leggere le memorie di questo segretario-amanuense-infermiere: Eric Fenby, Delius as I knew him (London, Bell, 1936; rist. London, Quality Press, 1947 e Westport, Connecticut, Greenwood Press 1976. 2ª ed. riveduta con pref. di Sir Malcolm Sargent, London, Icon Books 1966; 3ª ed. accr. con introd. di Christopher Palmer, London-Boston, Faber and Faber 1981). Utili sono anche due successivi testi di Eric Fenby: Delius (The Great Composers series, London, Faber, 1971) e Fenby on Delius, a cura di Stephen Lloyd (London, Thames Publishing, 1996), raccolta di scritti in onore del novantesimo compleanno dell’autore. L’aspetto clinico della malattia di Delius, causata dalla sifilide contratta in gioventù, è trattato nel saggio di John O’Shea, Music and Medicine. Medical profiles of great composers (London, Dent, 1990; trad. it. Musica e medicina. Profili medici di grandi compositori, Torino, Edt, 1991).
I problemi di salute e la residenza in Francia tenevano Delius al di fuori dalla vita concertistica inglese, ma l’amicizia col direttore d’orchestra Thomas Beecham, propagandista appassionato della sua musica, gli ha permesso di mantenere i contatti professionali internazionali; è perciò senz’altro utile leggere di Thomas Beecham Frederick Delius (London, Hutchinson, 1959; rist. New York, Knopf, 1960 e New York, Vienna House, 1973 e 1976; 2ª ed. accr. London, Severn House, 1975) e anche la sua autobiografia: Thomas Beecham, A Mingled Chime: An Autobiography (New York, G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1943; rist. col tit. A Mingled Chime: Leaves from an Autobiography, London, Hutchinson, 1944 e London, Columbus Books, 1987).
Il reticolo di rapporti fra Delius e l’Europa risulta evidente dall’epistolario, piuttosto consistente, curato da Lionel Carley in due volumi: Delius: A Life in Letters (I) 1862-1908 (London, Scolar Press, l983 e Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard University Press, 1984) e Delius: A Life in Letters (II) 1909-1934 (London, Scolar Press l988 e Brookfield, Vermont, Scolar Press, 1988). Più specifico è: Lionel Carley, Grieg and Delius. A Chronicle of their Friendship in Letters (London-New York, Marion Boyars, 1993).
Il bel saggio di Barry Smith, Peter Warlock. The Life of Philip Heseltine (Oxford - New York, Oxford University Press, 1994) parla molto di Delius e infatti il contributo di musicisti suoi corrispondenti e amici permette di aggiungere nuovi tasselli alla conoscenza della sua personalità. L’attività di studio è continuamente stimolata dalla Delius Society, fondata nel 1962 in occasione del Festival svoltosi a Bradford per il centenario della nascita. Come nel caso di vari altri compositori britannici (Bax, Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Bridge, Holst, Finzi, Moeran e così via), l’associazione riunisce musicologi, musicisti e anche semplici appassionati e promuove le ricerche, l’edizione delle partiture, le esecuzioni e le registrazioni, oltre a curare un archivio e la pubblicazione di una rivista. Si è iniziato nel 1963 con il trimestrale «Delius Society Newsletter», seguito da «The Delius Society Journal», oggi a cura di Jane Armour-Chélu, un semestrale (aprile e ottobre) giunto ormai al 131° numero. William Marsh si occupa invece di «The Delian. Journal of the Delius Society, Philadelphia Branch». Il sito ufficiale http://www.delius.org.uk/ fornisce inoltre notizie e aggiornamenti su libri, dischi e concerti in tutto il mondo.
Dal canto suo il Delius Trust, su iniziativa di Thomas Beecham, ha cominciato da tempo la pubblicazione della Collected Edition delle partiture: Frederick Delius. Complete Works ha superato la soglia dei 30 volumi ed è pubblicata (con una veste grafica uniforme) da Boosey & Hawkes, Stainer & Bell, Oxford University Press, Universal Edition, Forsyth Brothers, Schirmer e Thames Publishing.

Per quanto riguarda le registrazioni, Delius patisce fortemente l’attuale paradosso dell’industria discografica, che incide un’enorme quantità di materiale per mantenerlo poi in catalogo non più di qualche mese. Il solo Thomas Beecham ha effettuato tra il 1927 e il 1957 oltre 100 sessioni di registrazione, che la EMI ha in gran parte pubblicato (anche in cd) e poi lasciato semplicemente sparire. Se si aggiunge poi la chiusura di una casa discografica di qualità come la Unicorn-Kanchana che negli Anni Ottanta e Novanta ha pubblicato delle stupende edizioni di Delius, non resta che guardare con malinconia alla situazione di oggi.
Chi volesse stilare una discografia completa (si tratta di centinaia e centinaia di titoli) dovrebbe partire dallo studio di Stuart Upton e Malcolm Walker, Frederick Delius: A Discography, London, Delius Society of Great Britain, 1969 e poi consultare il sito della Delius Society.
L’elenco che segue è ovviamente molto lacunoso e comprende solo i cd che sono ragionevolmente reperibili in Italia nei negozi, senza rivolgersi all’importazione diretta dall’estero o alla ricerca nei magazzini dei grossisti...

Il quadro del materiale si può chiudere con due titoli interessanti. Il primo è la registrazione in videocassetta Vhs Pal di A Village Romeo and Juliet diretta da Sir Charles Mackerras con la regia cinematografica di Petr Weigl pubblicata nel 1992 dalla Decca (071 134-3) interpretata da Helen Field, Arthur Davies, Thomas Hampson, Barry Mora, Stafford Dean, Pamela Mildenhall e Samuel Linay con il Coro Arnold Schönberg e l’Orchestra Sinfonica della Radio Austriaca, ormai fuori catalogo. Il film si basa sulla corrispondente registrazione discografica della Argo (430 275-2), oggi di non facile reperibilità.
Si può invece acquistare (perlomeno per posta presso la Delius Society) la riedizione in Dvd o in Vhs del film per la Bbc di Ken Russell Delius. Song of Summer (British Film Institute, 2001, BFIVD518) girato nel 1968 con Max Adrian (Delius), Maureen Prior (sua moglie Jelka) e Christopher Gable (Eric Fenby). È forse il più riuscito tra i film in bianco e nero realizzati da Russell per la televisione prima di affrontare il tema musicale sul grande schermo con opere progressivamente sempre più ridondanti e kitsch come L’altra faccia dell’amore (1971), La perdizione (1974) e Lisztomania (1975).
